Windows Explorer just quits

Running Windows XP SP1 (cannot upgrade because SP2 not compatible with server
at work).

While doing various things, nothing specific, the desktop goes away except
for the actual wallpaper, and then reloads. All IE windows are shut down
completely, and almost all of the icons on the taskbar go away, but the
programs are still running. This happens about 5 or 6 times during an 8 hour
shift. It is really getting aggravating! I have run spyware/virus/scumware
checks, but system is clean.

Dr. Watson log only offers:

Application exception occurred:
App: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe (pid=3760)
Exception number: 80000007

I have searched and searched for a solution, but finding nothing. Some
offer partial symptomatology, but not exactly what I am experiencing; most
are related to specific tasks - mine is not tied to any specific
program/activity. It just - happens whenever - no warning, no error messages
popping up - just blanks out and reloads.

Thanks in advance!
