Same problem here. Explorer (as shell) shows itself for a few
millisecs and then : gone.
If you ever find the answer, please, let me know.
I'm a senior IT-professional, but I feel like a helpless kid in this
case.
Things I tried (and didn't help me) :
- Giant (now Microsoft) AntiSpyware
- Adaware pro
- Windows Defender
- Search And Destry
- Norton Antivirus
- Trend Micro HouseCall
- Windows Live Safety Center
Since above programs did not discover anything I assume that there is
no virus, spyware or malware in this mystery. My best guess is a
problem in the registry or some corrupt file.
So I tried the next (also with no result at all)
- running several registry edits from
www.kellys-korner-xp.com (no
effect at all)
- checked the registry in the obvious places (userinit, shell etc)
- Uninstalled all add ins for internet explorer (Downloaded Program
Files)
- Disabled all services not needed for the OS
- Checked all remaining services (all to be trusted)
- Created another account
- Starting in Safe mode
- Uninstalling a series of recent windows patches
- Reinstalled Service Pack 2
- Checked all programs that are started at logon with Sysinternals
Autoruns (all to be trusted)
- Checked the event log (everything OK)
- Traced what exactly happens when Explorer kills itself with with
Sysinternals FileMon (It just ends ...)
- for fun : renamed a copy of explorer.exe to something like
pleasework.exe (same result)
- Totally cleared the program cache.
- Installed IE 7 beta (didn't work at all)
- Checked autoexec.bat, config.sys, win.ini, system.ini and other
similar files
Things I haven't done :
- (cause my XP-CD is broken) a repair from Windows XP
If anyone has a clue, please, I'd be VERY happy.
