Windows Desktop Search changes search criteria

S

Sneff

I set WDS 4.0 on XP SP3 to search only "my music"

The above works perfectly until PC is rebooted and then Outlook and My
Documents appear in "Included Locations"

How can I stop the above?

Thank You

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing the change(s) (upon reboot). These include
anti-spyware applications (e.g., Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, WinPatrol, etc),
anti-virus appliations & security suites (Norton, McAfee, ESET/NOD32,
Kasperky, Trend Micro, etc.), and third-party firewalls (e.g., Zone Alarm,
etc.).

Note that temporarily disabling the application(s) or rebooting into Safe
Mode may not disable the system protections.

Yes I have a few of the programmes that you mentioned. I guess I'll have to
accept having to "rebuild" after each reboot.

Thank you for your response.

Why accept the behavior when you can (1) disable the protection(s), (2)
tweak Windows Search, (3) reboot, and then (4) re-enable the protections?

That's like saying, "I guess I have to keep driving on this flat tire" when
all you have to do is pull over & change the tire.

S

Sneff

I must apologise for my previous sloppy response. I had in fact done all that
you suggested but to no avail.

Useing System Config Utility I cancelled all Startup & Services except for
Microsoft programmes. I also disabled McAfee in the task bar.

I changed WDS to music only, rebooted and it was fine.
I ran System Config again to allow all startup & services to run.
I rebooted and it was fine. Reinstated McAfee again and the problem
reappeared.

Your second post prompted to try further. After numerous variations of the
above with no luck I decided to reinstall WDS with all the services as above
cancelled (may be not necessary). Set up WDS for music only, reinstated all
services inc. McAfee and there were no glitches no matter how many reboots or
reindex requests.

As a final test I added 'My Documents" to WDS without disableing McAfee and
I was back to the original problem which included (not mentioned previously)
very slow response in closing "indexing options" and "Internet Explorer
History" search which I could never locate to delete.

I believe that McAfee, if running during a search request change, corrupts
the WDS programme but thats for a better person to prove.

Thank you for your assistance and patience.

Unfortunately after all that work McAfee won and WDS has reverted back to the
original problem without even opening "Windows Search Options". I give up at
the moment but it should be resolved even if it is just for old XP.

Since the troublemaker seems to be the McAfee application, have you
contacted McAfee Support about this?

What's the name of this McAfee application (e.g., McAfee Security
Center-freebie from your ISP; McAfee VirusScan Plus/Internet Security/Total
Protection)?

Has another McAfee application or a Norton application ever been installed
on the computer (including a free-trial that came preinstall on the machine
when you bought it)?

Did you upgrade from Windows Desktop Search 3 to Windows Search 4?

Firstly to answer your questions;

I'm useing McAfee Total Protection and was a clean install after a reformat
in Feb 09.

I use Norton Ghost (Primarily for Backups) but has always been stopped
(msconfig) during testing.

Nothing else of that nature is installed.

Fairly certain that Windows Desktop Search 4 was a clean install.

After lengthly testing yesterday I am now fairly certain that McAfee is not
the culprit as the service was totally disabled and anomalies still happened.

Testing scenario;

Uninstall Windows Desktop Search, reboot, run CCleaner and Registry Booster,
reboot.

Disable all non-windows programmes and reboot. Task Mgr shows 25 processes
running.

Install WDS, reboot. Open WDS Options and note search criteria - Outlook, My
Documents etc.

Click modify. Untick as appropriate and tick Music. Click Advanced, rebuild
& close.

The process is humming, rebuilding from zero. Snooze. Index Now & Status all
good.

I rebooted at least once (vague) and Options still showed only Music being
searched.

At some point after this it all fell apart. Options now included Outlook -
clear that. Then Options included My Documents - clear that.
Then Options showed My Documents and Outlook and a yet to be found "Internet
Explorer History" so I can't clear that.
And lastly I switched on a external USB hard drive and sure enough WDS
decided to include that Drive in the search locations !!

I have checked Event Viewer and it looks fine.
I know WDS indexing is not complete the first time I reboot so there can't
be a problem there.

I don't know about you but I'm the "If all else fails - reformat" type of
person but that is cheating.

One observation that may be of interest - WDS will not run in safe mode, at
least on my PC.

Where is "Internet Explorer History" located? As a point of interest it is a
shame that when a folder is ticked in a drive, that the drive does not show a
shaded tick as in most other programmes.

Uninstall Windows Desktop Search, reboot, run CCleaner and Registry
Booster,
reboot.

Injudicious use of these "Registry cleaners" may have caused/be causing all
your problems, Sneff. If you think your Registry needs to be "cleaned" or
"repaired," read http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw your own
conclusions.

The (IE) History folder itself is a hidden folder & located C:\Documents and
Settings\[username]\Local Settings\History <=here.

To view the folder in Windows Explorer, you must first enable Show Hidden
Files and Folders; see this tutorial:

OK, no more "Registry Cleaners" for me!
Your other references have solved my problem.

Thank you for your patience.
