He meant, after you have downloaded and installed Windows Defender, go to
Microsoft Update, and it will download a new defination file.

I had the same problem with a pc connected throught a proxy server;
configuring it to go on the internet directly i have been able to update
defender. Somebody knows how to update passing throught a proxy server
(microsoft update works very well with this configuration)

Windows Defender is using Windows update to download signatures.

error 0x8024402C can result from numerous reasons:

1. An incorrect character exists in the proxy override settings.
2. A misconfigured Proxy/Firewall can cause this problem.
3. You are trying to access Windows Update using VPN. The website and
Automatic Update may not function properly.
4.The corporate environment does not have autoproxy implemented.
5.Your workstations sit behind a Microsoft ISA server.

I went out to Windows Update. While there it prompted me to install the
latest version of Windows Update, so I did. After that installation, I tried
to update Windows Defender using the Update button, and it worked. Up until
that point, I was having the same problems as described previously in this
post.

Hope this helps.

Dean.

I have a similar problem. I update the definitions thru Microsoft update
THEN it comes up with the orange exclamation point saying the definitions are
out of date...hmm. Next I try the update button from within Defender and it
comes back and says the definitions are up to date...hmm. But still the
little castle sits in my tray with it's little orange & black exclamation
point looking so forlorn...hmm
