defender check for new definitions

my windows defender security screen keeps telling me my defender definitions
are out of date. Every time i go to update it says i have the current
definitions. So I continually have the exclamation on my malware section and
question mark on my defender icon, any help or thoughts??

Go to:

www.microsoft.com/security/portal

and download, from the right column--the 32-bit Windows Defender definitions
(unless you know for sure that you are running a 64 bit version of Windows.)

Run the download. That should both bring you up to date, and fix the nag
issue, in my experience. This should take care of whatever is out of
kilter.

Are you, by any chance, running a registry cleaner, with too stringent
settings?
