Windows Defender update with dialup

This morning I discovered that my computer was dialing out without my
knowledge. Checked and found MpCmdRun.exe was running which I understand is
the part of Windows Defender that checks for updates. Examined settings in
WD confirmed the check box 'Check for updated definitions before scanning' is
not ticked.

Why is WD dialing out and how can I stop it? I am fortunate that dial up
does not cost me but some people will incurr cost.

Hello Roger,

I don't have an explanation, but you can try to repair:

You can repair Windows Defender.
First exit WD, Open WD main page, click the down arrow to the right of the
white question mark
in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender;
using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Click WD and click Change. Click Next, and then click Updªte.

Reboot

If you still have the same message, try this:

First exit WD, Open WD main page, click the down arrow to the right of the
white question mark
in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender;
using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Click WD and click Support Information and click Repair.

Reboot.

Let us know how it works ºut

I'm not certain that your evidence as posted here necessarily implicates
Windows Defender and MpCmdRun, but it may well.

You should also not join Spynet at any level.

Wouldn't it suffice to set Internet Explorer to "never dial a connection"? I
have dial up and I've never experienced this particular problem. I did have
similar problems with other software when I used AOL and it's dialer was set
on fast start and IE was set to dial whenever a network connection is not
present. I just recently switched to MSN dialup and as a test, I will now set
Defender to check for updates before scanning just to see what happens.
Interesting. If anything unusual happens, I'll post back.

That'd be an excellent idea as well!
