Error: Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x802

I've installed Windows Defender B2 on three (3) PCs. The first was a "clean"
PC, the other two were running MS Antispyware B1. Both of the ones that
upgraded MS Antispyware B1 do not update the definitions and get the
following message when I attempt to update: "Windows Defender was unable to
complete the update: 0x802440e".

WD was installed on the first PC on Friday, 2/17; the other two were
installed on Saturday 2/18. Is anyone else having this problem? Might the
update site be down?

Updates come via autoupdate or Windowsupdate.

(i.e. that should not be down.)

If you go to WindowsUpdate on a non-updating system, does it give you
signature updates?

The number you've posted appears to be unique in these groups, so I don't
have any other threads or advice to go by.

Consider using the steps in this KB article even though the premise behind
it does not apply

I've seen the "automatically detect" proxy setting on the Internet
connection in IE change the updating behavior--setting that off it is on or
on if it is off may be worth trying.

I found a discussion related to WSUS which turned out to be my problem.

Thanks,

Terrific--it'd be nice to have some magic filter to determine which posters
are on managed networks with SUS or WSUS and which are not.

I keep getting the same message after defender install ...unable to update
0x8024402c and I have done everything in the web connection and it did not
work. Dont think this beta version is a working version at least not in my
case.

Freddy - you are hitting a known bug--It will be fixed via a regular update,
I believe--and both updating and Real-time protection are working properly
even on systems with this bug in scanning.
