Windows Defender Update 1.14.1642.12

By following the link I can, of course, download the .exe file. However,
when I ask Defender to check for updates, it says that there are none. Any
idea why not? Can I trust the .exe update?

My version of Defender is
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0

Engine Version: 1.1.1508.0

Definition Version: 1.14.1643.13

There are none because you're entirely current. See Engel's latest post at
the top of this newsgroup re: Defender Update 1.14.1643.13

So since you are current, the next time a definition is released (maybe
Monday), YES you could trust the .exe update. The only time it could get
tricky is if you were way out of date... in that case it might require up
to three of those .exe applications in the right order to bring both your
engine and definitions current. You can run the definition update
executable directly, you don't have to download it first.

It is a good idea to be suspicious of "go here" web links posted in public,
and especially ones leading to an executable.

Engel sets a good example I should probably follow of posting via HTML, I
believe, which means that there is some authentication to his posting
identity, as there is for mine when I use the HTML forums to post.

You can look carefully at the URL and see whether the source site appears to
be reputable.

(so, yeah, you can trust this one, but you shouldn't need to--these URL's
should not be needed by most users.)
