decided to check for new updates to get this annoyance to stop appearing on
my taskbar, after i clicked check for new updates, its funny that it says
there are no new definitions available, and now even after i did what its
wanting to do, its still coming up on my taskbar, i try rebooting the
computer, no luck. how do i get this windows defender icon with the
exclamation mark to stop automatically appearing on my taskbar when i start
my pc.

Hello Jordan,

XP?

MpCmdRun.exe monitors for the existence of new signatures and is responsible
initiating the updating process when new signatures are available. ...check
that MsMpEng.exe within C:\Program Files \Windows Defender
has permission to run (firewall rule).

Also look here, ignore the message error

Hi Jordan,

Look in the Task Manager (hit Control-Shift-Escape keys to quickly bring up
Task Manager). Are they running in the Processes Tab.

It may not be the cause in your case, but it was in mine: Check if your
system date setting is correct. Mine was set 11 days ahead and that was
causing Windows Defender to think it has outdated malware definition
database.

To check date settings doubleclick the clock, that is visible in the lower
right corner of your screen. Check if date is set correctly. Time zone can
also affect it, but not that much.
