"Windows Defender is turned off."

Eachtime I try to turn it on, a pop up appears, "Secuirty Center is updating
definitions for Windows Defender ... Searching for definitions" and ends up
being "there are no new definitions available to download for Windows
Defender"
therefore I can't turn it on. It continues to show that the "Windows
Defender is turned off".

"Malware protection" is in red prompting me to turn that on, but I'm not
getting anywhere with that.

Are you by any chance running Windows Live OneCare? Generally, Defender
should not need to be turned on, but WLOC disables the standalone Defender
program.

I'm not sure whether this is part of what you have read, since you are
responding to an old thread:

Have you installed either Windows Live OneCare, or Microsoft Forefront
Client Security? If so, what you are seeing is expected--the alternative
app includes antispyware functionality.
