Windows Defender encountered an error 0x800703eb cannot complete this function

We have MS Vista Basic. This error keeps coming up over and over and over.
Any thoughts. It appears alot of folks get it but NO one knows how to fix it.

I have heard that before somewhere.

I'll bet I'm as Dutch a PAman as you are...

Since you have Vista Basic, it seems unlikely that you are on a corporate
network with a proxy server...

I'm getting pretty rusty at this stuff--but my recollection is that this
error indicates that IE is set to use a proxy server, and there isn't one,
or if there is, it isn't allowing access to the Windows Update servers.

Can you update via Windows Update? What's the date of the definitions in
Windows Defender? Is this machine on an institutional network of some sort?

Dear Bill,

My father's family has lived in the Lehigh Valley of PA. since coming from
Germany in 1753 and my mother's came here in 1713. We are the real thing.

I can update from the Update Link but Windows Defender seems to just stop
and shut down when it is scanning.

I have been on other sites and ALL SEEM to have started having his problem
soon after installing the newest AVG 8.0 Antivirus progam. Does that hel?

Have you also updated to AVG 8?

(My mother's family were originally Schwenkfelders--not sure just when they
came over--probably later than yours!)

I've yet to work with AVG 8, I'm afraid, but I've glanced at the messages in
these groups related to it.
