0x800703eb error

Ok, I was initially getting the 0x800106ba error aborting my scan and
advising me that a problem had caused the defender service to stop. Since
then I followed a suggested fix and registered several DLLs manually. The fix
appears to have worked and I am no longer receiving the original error.
However, I am now receiving a new error message "Windows Defender encountered
an error: 0x800703eb. Cannot complete this function." This error also causes
my scan to stop.

Anyone have any suggestions? I searched the forum and found one mention of
this issue from late March, but no suggested fixes.

Hello John,

Can you go to Windows Update, do an Express (Get high-priority updates)
scan, and apply all offered updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature update
with windows defender will fail until you hªve these files.

You can run in safe mode with networking.

Look for the broom Clean up, also Tune Up..

Beªr in mind there is no "single" solution that fits everybody's prºblems.

I hope that (this) post is helpful.

Please , rate the pºsts.

I don't mind trying that, but it's probably worth noting that I'm getting the
error while scanning the PC, not while updating Defender. I've had no
problems at all updating defender.

John, I too have gotten the same error (00800730eb) as you. This error
happens randomly. I have already taken steps to update software and
definitions, but I still get the error. If you hear any more please advise.
Thanx,
Cummings Keaney

What Windows Defender version are you on? (Help, about, within the
program--top number)

If this is 1051--I'd advise doing a new download from www.microsoft.com

There is slightly newer code which hasn't been pushed out to users of the
1051 code yet.

I believe that is current as of the time you wrote.

I'm just back from vacation, and somewhat jet-lagged, but I don't think I
have any more light to shed on your basic issue, I'm afraid.
