Windows Defender definitions

Defender is showing the following message:

Windows Defender definitions haven't been updated in 15 days. I have
checked for updates and am told that everything is up to date. I have
uninstalled and re-installed the software but still get the same message.

The signature version is: 1.14.1315.1 built on 08/03/2006 at 09:06

i don't understand this as today is 24/03/2006 and it was re-installed at
06:15. Another post suggests that there is a more recent version.

Can you help?

Thanks for your reply. I followed your link and downloaded Definition update
1.14.1353.2. I then looked at my update history and discovered that this
update had already been downloaded a number of times. However the
definitions listed in Defender are as follows:

Windows Defender ver: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Ver: 1.1.1185.0
Signature Ver: 1.14.1315.1 built on 08/03/06 at 09:06

The error message now shows:

"Windows Defender definitions haven't been updated in 17 days"

And just for your info every day I get an error message telling me that
Defender cannot remove a problem. The problem is called "Grokster" and the
error number ends with the digits "8001" - I think! (I should have written it
down)

Any help would be appreciated

I 5hink you are lucky to have got 1.14.1315. I have another problem which I
cannot solve.

Because thee updater was erratic to say the least, I uninstalled and
re-installed Defender. This reset signature to 1.0.0.0. I ried to update and
I got Defender is fully updated. But it wasn't. Then tried Windows update
which confirmed update was necessary (but was a zero size download) and
reported a suucessful install, but it wasn't.

Now somwhere in the Microsoft site I recall that if a re-installation is
effected, then the updater will only work on a new signature version and will
not update to existing versions. Anyone confirm this, please.

Please try the steps in this article for the update problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

The Grokster problem indicates that the object detected is in an archive
file--zip, cab, arj, etc. The System event log will have records whose
source is "windefend" for Windows Defender actions. The detection, during
the scan, will have a yellow triangle marking making it easy to spot. The
detection record will have the full path and name of what was detected.
That can be cut and pasted to a message here via the button in event
viewer--you may be able to delete or rename this yourself.
