Windows can't find jpg email attachment after running "disk clean

Running XP Home Addition 2002 w/SP2 - system was getting bogged down, running
slow so I ran across an offer for "RegCure" clean-up software which included
"ParetoLogic\Privacy Controls" program. Having never performed any sort of
clean up on my system it was pretty bad. The scans found several thousand
"errors". I attempted to eliminate files I tho't should NOT be erased and
then deleted the rest. I figured I would end up doing something I shouldn't
have but it was in such poor shape I took the leap. Today someone emailed me
a file that had 3 jpg's attached. When I tried to open each one I rec'd an
error window "Windows cannot find 'C:\Documents and Settings\L....a
H...l\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\69LEXXRV\XXX.jpg'.
Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." Since I hadn't
typed the file name I knew that wasn't the problem.

I opened Explore to see the expanded list of folders under My Computer. I
looked at C:\Documents and Settings\L....a H...l\Local Settings and
discovered that the TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES and HISTORY folders were not
there. I tho't I had figured out the problem. So I just tried to name a new
folder for each but when I tried to save each one I got an error that the
file already existed and I couldn't re-use the name. If they are there why
don't they show? If they are there why couldn't I open the jpg's?

Secondary issue - I have folders and subfolders for several users even
though I'm the only one using the computer now. I have (1) Administrator (2)
Default User (3) L...a H...l [my name] (4) All Users. There are some contents
of these duplicated within the 4 and there are some contents which are
defunct. Is there any fairly easy way to consolidate these into a more
streamlined list?
Sorry for the length but I figured the more info you had the easier to
respond. Thanks.

Uh, well, I guess I should have started out saying that I am pretty much
clueless when it comes to maintaining my computer or any other sort of
computer-related task (I guess I tho't it would be clear from the content of
my posting). Regardless, I don't even know what a registry is. I thought I
was cleaning it when I performed the scans with RegCure, etc. I have read
through the info on your referred link and I assume you are not recommending
I use the "onecare" product discussed therein but that you are recommending
that I use the system disk cleanup inherent in XP to remove the clutter from
my system and defragment the hard drive by following the step by step
instructions. I will happily do that, except will that return my missing
Temporary Internet Files and History folders to their correct place? I find
myself wondering if you really read my question completely or if you just
jumped to the Secondary issue. That issue is the least important to me. What
I need to be able to do is open attachments to emails which I am currently
unable to do. Will that problem be solved by doing the disk cleanup and hard
drive defragmentation?

Ugh! Very likely the source of your problems.

Registry cleaning programs are *all* snake oil. Cleaning of the
registry isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and
don't use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and
what vendors of registry cleaning software try to convince you of,
having unused registry entries doesn't really hurt you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.

I know it states below your response "Please Reply to the Newsgroup" but I
don't know HOW to do that so I just clicked on Reply. So you are recommending
that I should NOT follow the suggestion from PA Bear [MS MVP] to perform disk
cleanup and hard drive defragmentation? Can you recommend what I SHOULD DO to
solve my problem - I need to be able to open attachments to emails which I am
currently unable to do?

No, I didn't say that. I doubt that it will solve your problem, but it
shouldn't hurt.

Running a registry cleaner, not surprisingly, has apparently badly
screwed up your system. You should check to see if your registry
cleaner can undo the changes it made. If so, try that first. If not,
and you let it make several thousand changes, almost certainly your
computer is now so badly screwed up that your best recourse may be to
back up your data, and then reformat and reinstall Windows from
scratch.

I can't tell for sure of course, but my guess is that the inability to
open attachments may be the least of the problems the registry cleaner
has caused for you. You just haven't seen the others yet.

Note phrases like "may be" and "my guess" above. I can't see your
computer and I can't be sure what condition it's in. But letting a
registry cleaner make several thousand changes sure would scare me.

I don't even know what a registry is.

Then how did you know it needed to be "cured" or cleaned up?
I assume you are not recommending...

Then how did you know it needed to be "cured" or cleaned up? ****Because my system was running so slow, much slower than it ever had (and I've got a lot of unused memory left yet) and a pop-up window said "Is your system slow?" so being an uninformed consumer I clicked on it and purchased the RegCure.

I merely pointed you to a conversation about the pros and cons of Registry
cleaners. ***I was hoping you were pointing to something that would tell me how to solve my problem - which was the reason for my posting so I wasn't sure what point you were trying to get across. You and one other have responded only with info telling me I shouldn't have done it. Too late for that now.

I read the entire post. Why do you think having used RegCure is a Secondary
issue? ****If you read the entire post I guess I wasn't clear & it was so detailed...the secondary issue had nothing to do with a question about RegCure. It was asking if there's a way to consolidate folders since there seem to be 4 different "user" groups and I'm the only user. I'm afraid I'm not helping clarify because I don't know all the terms for the places I'm referring to but when you look at the list of folders in Explore under the C: drive that's what I'm referring to. Where the entire contents of the drive is listed like an outline.

****However, at this point I really need a hopefully simple answer to the
following (and nevermind the secdondary issue): There seems to be 2 missing
folders under Documents and Settings...\Local Settings -- the Temporary
Internet Files folder folder (maybe that's where email jpg attachments get
put when an email is rec'd?) - and the other missing folder is the History
folder. I say "Missing" because I can't see them but when I tried to make a
new folder to replace the "missing" ones the system said it already existed
and I couldn't use the same name. This is where I am stuck. This is what I am
experiencing --
I get a picture (jpg) attached to an email but when I try to open it I get a
message saying that Windows cannot find the Temporary Internet Files folder.
I know I did something I shouldn't have...that been clearly conveyed to me
now. All I want to know is if it's possible to locate the 2 missing folders.
Of if there is some other solution (hopefully other than starting over to
reinstall the entire system).

RegistryCleaners are evil. Unless it has a "undo changes" option you
could also try to find a restore point which was created before you ran

Good luck.
