Windows cannot load the user's profile

I keep getting this message

"Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.


DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format. "

Im new to XP and dont know how to fix this!

any help is appreciated

I'm having the exact same problem as the original poster is. I followed Jupiter's advice and link, did all the steps as listed and correctly, and now both the original profile and the new one I created display the same error message on start up. So annoying!

Do other profiles work OK?
If you create a new profile and do not copy anything does it work OK?
