Windows Basic is not Aero capable. You would need to upgrade
to another edition of Vista in order to have Vista Aero.

Vista Home Basic only includes a very Basic version of the Aero theme,
without the glass effect, mainly because hardware capable of running Vista
Home Basic might not be capable of running the full Aero settings. You need
to upgrade to at least Vista Home Premium, but first you need to be certain
your computer can run it.

So goes the nature of Microsoft's "marketing" machine. Confusion, confusion,
confusion and pay, pay, pay.

Cheers.

The registry hack is the only way to do other than upgrade to a version
which includes Aero, it so if it didn't work for you then you did something
wrong..

Aero is only available in versions other than Home Basic. The registry hack
is something that allows a PC that doesn't meet the hardware specs to use
aero, but the software does support it.

About the only way to get it to work is to upgrade to a different version of
Vista.

You avoid the first three parts of the marketing machine if you do your job
as a customer and know what you're buying before you buy. Generally this
entails either reading the back of the box, or going on the Microsoft website.

It's not hard. You just need basic reading and comprehension abilities.

I looked into the registry hack that has been published, and apparently it
doesn't work. I believe the hack was first worked by somebody when the lost
Aero capability in Ultimate edition, and it was assumed, wrongly, that the
hack would work in ALL editions..

That's kind of the point of the Basic version - it excludes features found
in the more advanced versions. There's no way to turn it on, if there were
there would be little point in selling the other versions, would there?

There are two things you'd have to do, and only one of them is upgrading to
a non-Basic version. The other is installing hardware that is sufficient
for the Aero interface to be loaded and run. That means the processor,
memory and video hardware must all meet or exceed certain levels.

If your system came with Vista Basic, it's possible that it does not have
the hardware needed. If that is the case, and you could tell by running
the Vista Upgrade Advisor, consider replacing the entire system if you want
the Aero interface.

os itself.
