Windows Activation Site Address?

Is anyone familiar with the address the Activation tool connects to for
Internet Activation? We have an auth system in place that forces students to
be patched and such before they can connect to the network, and only allows
them access to update sites before they pass the checks. The problem we're
running into now is that on rebuilds they have to Activate now before they
can access Windows Update, and unless we allow the Activation sites through
for the quarantined access, they'll never be able to complete the process.

I'm looking for the URL or at least the full hostname the Activation site
resides at.

XP uses the standard HTTP port (port 80) and HTTPS port (port 443)
for product activation. To confirm that these ports are available, try
connecting to both ports by entering the following addresses in your
Web browser:

http://www.microsoft.com:80
https://www.microsoft.com:443

If you receive an error, check with your administrator to determine
whether your organization has blocked either port and whether you
need to change your firewall client configuration.

Carey,

Thanks for your response. However, I am aware that it uses ports 80 and 443
to connect. The ports are not the issue. I need to know the hostname for the
site that is contacted via port 80/443 so that I can allow that host through.
While machines are in the quarantine they can only pass traffic to/from the
specific hosts we allow.

Hi,

What happens if you open up for genuine.microsoft.com ?

I'll try that and see how it goes. I'll have to contact a student that needs
to activate or build a box to test this as all our faculty/staff machines are
volume licenses that don't need activation. Thanks for the reply- I'll post
when I have any results.

Nate,

If you cannot gain direct access to the Internet then you always have the
option of telephone activation (this is toll free in many countries).

Right, which is what we've passed on to the student that helped bring this to
our attention. We'd just like to make it available via internet activation,
since it's easy once we have at least the host.. if nothing else, we might
just have to add *.microsoft.com (if I can narrow it to that and not some
third party), but I was hoping for a little more detail. At this point I
can't get past MS's front line drones to someone that knows, and most ppl
don't really care where it's at so long as it works when they try.

Thanks for the reminder anyhow.
