Windows 98SE to Windows XP

I am trying to upgarde my laptop from 98SE to XP and am told that the upgrade
will require proof of purchase when loading the software. The store clerk
told me this is the code from the 98SE cd-rom. Only problem is I was buying
the upgrade because I cannot find my cd-rom!!! In fact, I know 98SE was
already installed on my laptop and I am not even sure if I was provided with
a cd-rom of the software. What are my choices? And please don't say shell
out the $200 for the full version!! I can only afford the $50 upgrade.
Thanks in advance!!

If 98 is currently on your laptop - upgrade is no problem - boot 98 insert
XP CD and carry on. If 98 is not installed - XP setup will ask for
verification by requesting you insert a 98 CD - which it checks and then
proceeds with XP installation.

True enough.

The store clerk
told me this is the code from the 98SE cd-rom.

That's not correct. You need to have either Win98 installed, or the
CD. The Win98 Product Key would be useless for this purpose.

Obtain a Win98 CD from A computer swap meet or a used software store.
As it is, you'll be able to upgrade the existing Win98 installation, but
if anything goes wrong in the future that requires a reinstallation,
you'll need to be able to prove to the Upgrade that you've the earlier
license.

However, before getting too far along, have you verified that all of
your PC's hardware components are capable of supporting WinXP? This
information will be found at the PC's manufacturer's web site, and on
Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models
in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective or substandard hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.
