Windows 7 Mail problem

Using Windows 7 Professional with a Gmail account.

I installed Windows Live Mail and it works - but.

Whenever I Sync (F5) it takes a long time and sometimes indicates the
server is not connected too. Do I want to wait and I answer yes - then it
proceeds VERY SLOWLY?

Is there a problem with Google Gmail and Syncing mail?

Is there something I missed in the setup?
