Windows 2003 as additional DC in 2000 Active Directory

Hello,

I have a Windows 2000 active directory in native mode with 2 DC's and
Exchange 2000. I will be replacing one of the DC's with Windows 2003.
Can Windows 2003 serve as a backup dc without upgrading to Active
Directory 2003 and are there any special steps other then running
dcpromo and selecting the existing AD? Thanks ahead of time.

you must be prepare your Schema with ADPREP from the 2003 CD for Windows
Server 2003. If your 2003 Server are R2, then you must be use ADPREP
from the _second_ R2 CD.

Does that mean that you cannot have a Windows 2003 DC (just for backup)
without upgrading Active Directory 2000? Right now all I need is
another 2000 AD dc. Thanks.

You can not add a Windows 2003 DC to a Win 2k domain without upgrading the
Win 2k domain to Win 2k3. You can add it as a member server without
upgrading but I don't think that will do you any good.

Besides running ADPrep /forestprep and ADPrep /domainprep.. I am reading
from KB 314649 that you have to make and run a InetOrgPersonPrevent.ldf
script BEFORE you run ADPrep if you already have Exchange 2000 server
running on the 2000 domain.

Can anyone confirm this?

true!
not needed if you already have exch 2003
(by the way: why need confirmation if it is mentioned in a KB?)

before even being able to add a w2k3 DC you MUST update the AD schema.
however, you can have w2k3 member servers without updating the AD schema

Thanks for responding. Its always good to clarify things.

Confirmation: Because sometimes the KB's are not what you call clear or
accurate all of the time especially when you have to combine information
from several locations into one solution. And if someone else has been
through it already we can learn from their experiences.
