I have been trying for a week to install win2k back on
pc. I have a brand new maxtor 60g hd and it has literally
taken 24 hours or more to install and then right before
install finishes, the hd just stops and hangs. I have to
reboot and start all over. This has done the same if i
load XP. I have no extra hardware on pc besides video
card. 512 ram 1.2 gig cpu. any ideas? please help before
i throw pc out window

How are you installing? To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000
install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created
from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the
CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and
follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

I have done this also..I am using the set up disks and
have replaced them twice just in case they were bad. any
other ideas

thanks

What part of the install is stalling? It sounds like you're installing from
starting dos. What is the drive controller make? Is all hardware Windows
2000 compliant? Always best to boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom to start the
install.

All hardware is 2000 compliant. I have used the cd-rom to
boot but it acted in the same way so i used the disks and
still no avail. I don't know off hand the drive
controller make. I have done this before and never had to
really deal with drive controller. I bought the new hard
drive hoping it would fix my problems. The same thing was
happening on my older hard drive that I had XP on. I am
going to guess a hardware issue but i am out of ideas
what it could be. I have also tried Win98. Would my ram
be causing this?

Thanks

You can remove some of it if you question it.
