I'd like to repartition my harddrive. I am running
windows 2k pro on my IBM thinkpad 760el. How do I remove
the ntfs system and convert back to FAT32 system?

Hi, earrington.

Three ways I can think of:

1. Invest your time: Backup; repartition; reformat; (might have to
reinstall or at least Repair Windows to rewrite the boot sector;) restore.

2. Invest your money: Buy Partition Magic (about $70) or something
similar.

3. Don't know why you'd want to, but you can boot from a Win9x/ME floppy
diskette and use FDISK to repartition and Format.exe to reformat. You must
backup before and restore after you reinstall Windows, of course.

There is no way to convert a NTFS partition back to FAT32 without
re-formatting, which would require you to re-install you Operating System.
If you are going to re-install your Operating System and wish to use Fat32,
then choose to partition and format it as you wish during the OS reinstall.

How do I reformate. Can I use windows 98 startup disk?
Should I fdisk to repartition the drive and reformate with
windows 98?

Do you WANT to reinstall Win98?

If not, then simply boot from the Win2K CD-ROM and follow the instructions.
One of the first questions asks if you want to repartition and/or reformat.
Say Yes. Unless you plan to install Win9x/ME on this computer, choose to
format NTFS all the way. NTFS is much more secure than FAT, both in the
sense of security from unauthorized access and in the sense of security from
hard disk glitches.

Unless you plan to reinstall Win98 (or to format a larger-than-32GB
partition as FAT32), there is no reason to keep the old DOS/Win98 boot disk.
Throw it away (or at least hide it so that you won't be tempted to use it
again). Use the Win2K CD-ROM to do the initial partitioning and formatting.
After you get Win2K up and running, use Disk Management (type diskmgmt.msc
at the Run prompt) to do any additional partitioning, formatting, drive
letter assignment, etc.

You can do it with your CD windows 2000 put your CD in and Do a Clean
install before you do Backup all the Data you need . when you put your
CD for win 2000 Pro in it will ask you if you want a clean install yes,
then choose Fat 32 after your Disk is Formatted.
Hope this helps if you have more Questions email me anytime
