Windows 2000 professional doesn't work

My PC starts the following processes in safe mode.
CRSS.EXE
explorer.exe
LSASS.EXE
SERVICES.EXE
SMSS.EXE
ssonsvr.exe
System
System Idle Process
TASKMGR.EXE
WinMgmt.exe

But in normal mode starts up a whole lot more probably
due to lot of internet browsing and CPU/Memory are pegged
at 100% on startup.
How do I remove all these unwanted programs from startup &
not allow them to start up after startup.

Thanks

- How do you decide which programs are "wanted" or "unwanted"?
- Do you have a specific problem in starting Win2000? If so, please
supply full details: How far does the boot process go, what
happens, what exact error messages do you get, what have
you changed lately, details about your virus scanner & firewall
etc. etc.

Don't forget PC information. If a normal boot of Windows
is pegging your CPU usage at 100%, it may be a resource
problem.

Let us tackle it this way. How do I delete everything and
keep just the base operating system. I had purchased the
refurbished laptop and not sure how I could get ahold of
Windows 2000 cd. I am ready to wipe out everything and
reinstall what I need for cheap. What are my alternatives
of reconfiguring the pc altogether?

Thanks.

Start\Settings\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer
Management(Local)\System Information\Software Environment\Startup
Programs|View|Advanced, then in the "Location" column, you'll find the path
to the "Startup" location either in the "Startup" directories or from the
registry's "Run" keys.

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

You can delete the shortcuts that you no longer want to run.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can delete the string value for the program you no longer want to run.

Pop in your Win2000 CD, then boot from this CD and do a
fresh installation of Win2000. This will give you a basic
installation, without any extras that might be added by
applications.

First it helps to have a couple of handy tools to facilitate things.
You can do things manually but you should take a look at these tools,
they make things easier:

Code Stuff Starter (475kb): http://codestuff.cjb.net/

p-nand-q pserv.cpl: http://p-nand-q.com/e/pserv.html
pserv is just a replacement for the Windows Services Manager. I find it
to be a nice alternative.

Secondly you will have to find out what the started services and
processes are for. You will have to decide for yourself which one to
keep and which ones to remove. You should be able to whittle the list
down to (I think) 12 processes if you wish. It depends on what is on
your pc and how it is configured and what you deem as needed for your
uses. For help on that see here:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
(It's geared to Windows XP but it's pretty well the same for W2K)
