windows 2000 ICS problems

I am trying to set up a wireless home network that shares a DSL
connection using internet connection sharing and I am not having much
success. So, I wonder if anyone can give me some tips as to what I may
be doing wrong (or where the trouble might be).

PC1: a windows 2000 laptop that is connected to the internet via a PPPoE
over a DSL line. On this machine I use a netgear 802.11b wireless card
to for the home network side. On this machine I set the ICS on the PPPoE
dialup connection (I use raspppoe) and set the netgear card to be the
home lan.

PC2: a windows XP laptop with a built-in wireless card (Sony VAIO-Z1).

The wirless cards are set to run in ad-hoc mode. No encryption yet until
I debug this connection.

PC2 (client) sees that PC1, is able to obtain an IP number from it via
DHCP, and I am able to share files between the two PC's. Also, I can do
nslookup on PC2 and it works fine via the gateway machine PC1. It is
able to resolve the name. But, I cannot access anywhere on the internet
from PC2. It just hangs there. I cannot ping (even IP numbers), etc.
Here is a typical tracert result:

The two machines run firewalls, but they are set to trust each other
(and obviously it works because they can share files in both
directions). In any case, I have also shut the firewalls down to try and
see if this is the problem and it is not. It still does not work even
without the firewalls running.

I don't see any error messages or complaints on the event log on the W2K
machine (PC1).

What am I doing wrong? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Does the first firewall have any log? I would uninstall this firewall
completely for troubleshooting, fixed winsocks, reinstall TCP/IP etc, i.e.
obvious stuff.

Yes, it does have logs. I can't see anything. In any case, I have shut
it down and tried (actually, I have shut down both firewalls and tried).
It still doesn't work.
