Windows 2000 Advanced Server

Fred

I have acquired Windows 2000 Advanced Server with the intention of using
this rather than Windows 2000 Pro.

Are there any disadvantages in using the Advanced Server version when using
Windows applications as opposed to the Professional version?

The first one that comes to mind will be the cost of a corporate version of
some AV software. Which for the home user is probably going to hurt.

Is that the only problem I should foresee. I don't intend to use it as a
server but as a workstation. Nevertheless I would need a virus checker. Do
these really differentiate between Win 2000 Pro and server?

You going to be running a server?

Not at the moment - I presently intend to use it as a workstation.

Then there's absolutely no viable reason to use it.

If you're going to use it as a workstation then use PRO, you'll have less
services running and better performance.

Many thanks for your help - exactly the answer I hoped for.

What I would do instead Fred, is install something like Connectix Virtual PC
and install Adv Svr into a Virtual OS.

At least that way you can play around with it. :)
