Window Explorer has encountered an error

I seriously need help. My computer after it automatically receives critical
updates, installs them, asks me to restart (sometimes I don't do it right
away & sometimes I do), after restart, I will get an error message saying my
windows explorer has encountered an error & asks if I want to report this
message to Microsoft. When I view on the error report I see something like
user32.dll. All my icons on my desktop disappears including my task bar on
the bottom. I have to do ctl-alt-del to restart in safe mode & restore it to
my last good date (04/14/2006). It happens after an update has been made and
it has been happening every day now. Please suggest anything that can be
helpful. I'm stumped. Checked forums & can't find anything.

Andrew,
Thank for your respnse to May. I have a nearly identical problem. It
occurred immediately folowing an automatic update on April 17. When the
system re-booted it came up with the lowest resolution and color set and I
was only able to get my normal setup back by returning the system to its
state before the April 17 download.
This fix very temporarilly as the system has defaulted to the same problem
several times since then, most recently after I turned off automatic updates
altogether.
I would be very much obliged if you could help me understand how to obtain,
and install the "hotfixes" you referred to. I am having uneven success in
accessing this site so I can be reached at (e-mail address removed) in the even you
choose to respond.
Many thanis in advance.
Richard
