Windiws XP & 98

I have 4 windows XP machines, 2 windows 98 machines, a network attached storage device (acting as a DHCP server), and an ISDN router, all networked with cat5 cabling.
I can only network the windows 98 machines to the XP network if I create a static IP address for them. However, they both cannot connect to the internet.
I've enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP on each XP machine but this has not solved the problem.
1. How can I get the W98 machines onto the network without static IP's.
2. How can I enable internet connection for them through my router.
I would be grateful for any guidance.

First are the XP machines XPp or XPh?? You would be better off if all were
static ip's being you only have 6. You don't have a Domain controller so
domain issues won't be a problem with static ips it's just a matter of
putting in a few things and your done. Do the XP machines connect to the
net??

In answer, 3 of them are XP home, and 1 is XP Professional edition.
And yes, at the moment only the XP machines can connect to the internet via an ISDN dial-up router.

It would 'appear' that the win98 pcs aren't getting the
gateway address ip to be able to route out. It's not
enough to just assign them a static ip, you need dns and
gateway ip's deliniated to them from the dhcp server as
well. Usually you can individually seed them into win98
too, but I'd try to get them leased by the dhcp server
router/box so it's all automatic.

I know what your talking about but let me tell you when you put all of them
static 90% of your problems will go away. Logon to your router which I
assume is the gate way to the net and go to status page write down the DNS
of your ISP close out of there put the DNS primary and secondary in the
TCP/IP property page, do that on all machines and your done. Make sure you
have share on each. You can at the command prompt type ipconfig/all and hit
enter and you should be able to see the gateway and DNS. They meaning all
should connect to the net and each other. Before doing this disable all DHCP
servers. By having static you will after a time know what IP goes with what
machine and be able to address any problem with ease.

Once 9x machine is up go to a dos prompt and type ipconfig/all and post that
to this group, once I see that I'll be back in touch.
