WinDefend service won't start for X64 Beta2 - W 2000 fix doesn't w

Beta1 worked fine on my (50) XP pro 64 bit machines (HP 8200 dual xeon's -
yes XP pro IS the 64 bit version) Loaded beta2 and the installation complains
that "...(windefend) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient
priveleges..."

Manually starting the services gives a different message:

it returns..."...Error 0x80070002: The system cannot find the file
specified."

MsMpEng.exe is in the path as specified.

Any 64 bit users out there with a successful beta2 install?

I don't have a test platform for this, but I know that several 64-bit users
have stayed with the beta--I'll see if I can recall any of them and get
perhaps offline responses.

My gut feeling is that this is a genuine permission issue--so I'd wonder
whether anything has been done to lock down these machines, and what the
permissions on that executable and it's folder look like, from the
standpoint of the credentials that are being used to start the service.

(and, since I have another query about this in the Install group--remind me
about the Windows 2000 fix? I seem to have lost track of that at the
moment..)

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the quick reply. here is the text of the windows 2000 fix
(5/9/2006):

I may have a fix for the service failed errors everyone's getting on Win 2000.
I tried to install, got the WinDefend service failed to start error. While
it's in that error state, open up your services. Then open the defender
service and change it from local account to an administrator account on your
network. Try to start the service. Mine came back with "access denied."
Great. Now change it back to local account, and presto, it should work. At
least mine did anyway.

As for permissions, I am admin and these services are wide open to me it is
complaining of a file not found...

Thanks - I've another Windows 2000-related post that states that applying a
security rollup patch fixed the issue for him.

I haven't managed to dig up my other x64 sources--I've got a machine
upstairs capable of running it, but last I installed it, there was no driver
for the NIC which limited the utility somewhat.... I may be ready to try
that again, although I'm not sure whether I have a source for the OS
itself--that was a trial, and I'm not sure I can re-try the trial
version--I've change wireless nics to a newer and better supported one, so
there's some chance of improvement.

I'll try again later tonight to spot some x64 users here or in other lists I
read.

Well I have good news and Really BAD news!
good - I was able to successfully install defender v1.1.1347.0
bad - I really can't tell you what the fix is...
I had my older MSI and re-loaded it thinking that MpClient.dll was a problem
(MsMpEng.exe complained about it being missing) so I copied it into the
install directory and tried restarting the service - no luck. Did complete
uninstall (the only thing that logically could be the fix since I let the
installation remove the old code in the previous attempts) and logged out/in
- reinstalled and the damned thing installed - I will experiment with some of
my other machines next week to verify a fix (if I can isolate one) stay
tuned...

Thanks (I think!)

I wonder if this was an incomplete install, or something of that ilk? I'm
not aware of anything new in x64 about permissions on executables, but I
probably wouldn't be.
