win98SE which 'newer' board works for you?

A poster indicated I may have problems with win 98 and some of the newer
asus boards. I don't want to upgrade my O/S. Who is using what and any
problems? My goal is to get around a 2 gig chip with the ability to
expand ram and cpu just a bit when I get more $. I'm even considering
going with an athlon. I don't need the latest and greatest, just better
than the 433 I have now.

I'm dual booting win98se & xp with a p4c800E & have no problems.
you'll have to do without HT in win98.
cheers

I don't think it's a mobo issue. Win 98 will not boot if the PC has a
CPU > 2.1 GHz (IIRC). See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312108&Product=w98
and do a search for the file on Google so you don't have to bother/pay
those nice MSoft peeps.

He won't have to spend anything other than the time and bother of having to
call Microsoft. I have found that for hotfixes, MS is both courteous and
efficient. As long as he has the Knowledge Base article #, he is good to
go.

I have win98se running on an A7N8X-Deluxe motherboard with no
problems. CPU is running at 2125 Mhz, a Duron 1600 OC'ed.

I didn't have any problems getting Win98SE to install on a P4T533-C
system with a 2.66 GHz P4. I think that article may only apply to the
original 98 - not 98SE.

I'm also running Win98SE on a P4B with a 2 GHz P4, but that board uses
SDRAM which slows things down a bit (not that it's really noticeable;
it's my gaming rig, and I have no complaints with it).

Does the 2.1 GHZz limit apply in win98SE too? If so is there a fix for it
too?

Microsoft, and hence many hardware vendors, are beginning to drop support
for Win 98. Thought you should know...

Running two A7N8X DLX on Win98SE 24/7 at 100% CPU load with no
trouble. 2500+ @ 3200+ (2.2Ghz).

I understand that means I can't call up but they aren't just going to
wipe away windows update and the old KB are they?

Regarding the win98se 2.1+ chips, after reading everyone's reply, I'm
pretty confident I'll have zero problems with a 2 gig chip and even if I
decide on something faster, I should be ok too. Thanks for the advice
everyone. I think I have all my bases covered and am almost ready sift
thru the list and see what I want to buy. By the time I'd get tired of
this faster chip, it would probably be time for a new m/b anyways lol.

thanks but apparently from what I read on here, SE will be cool with a
bigger chip.

They will continue to offer updates if deemed critical. I also read
somewhere that they may be offering the entire Win98 update catalog either
on CD or for downloading to create your own CD. They are going to do this
with WinXP for sure, to help computer technicians install service packs and
updates on machines w/ no internet or slow internet connections. I may have
read it here a while back: http://www.activewin.com/awin/default.asp

I think support for Win98 will remain in the form of online help groups and
forums (e.g. - newsgroups), and perhaps those good websites like
http://aumha.org/sitemap.htm

There is still quite a bit of support for DOS (Thank God!).

Win98SE installed like a charm on my A7N8X DLX, even the USB. Running
an Athlon XP 2200+ with 512 Mb RAM (soon to be a gig). The only real
problem is NVidia's lame driver support for Win9x - there've been no
new official drivers since last Spring, and there's never been an IDE
driver (Windows default IDE drivers work fine but are rather slow).

Can run win98se on all intel chipsets with intel application accelerator
and ndis.vxd update ,at all cpu speeds. Only limitation is that HT will
not be engaged where the cpu supports it because only Win XP supports it
and there is no raid support for ide or sata drives on the latest asus
boards using win98se.

One thing all the others did not mention:
Be aware, that Win98 has a problem with large amounts of ram.
If you have more than 768 MB (or was it at 512 already?) you need to
limit Win98 in menory use by using some System.ini entry in the vcache
section. Otherwise it will not work.
I made Win98 work with a 2.8 GHz P4 1Gig RAM. You also have to set the
onboard IDE controller to compatible mode, because Win98 will not work
with three IDE contollers.
You will not have USB 2.0 but only 1.1 working.

All in all: why do you want to go with a new motor in such an old car?
You relly should consider upgrading to Windows XP (PRO)
