win2k won't show desktop

W

Wilbert

I inadvertently powered off my computer before shutting
down win2k. When I boot up it gives me a blank blue
screen. The Mouse works but no ICONs are displayed. To
shut down I must bring up the Task Manager and click the
shutdown button. I also get explore.exe not responding. I
suspect a corrupt file somewhere but have no idea which
file. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Wilbert

Hi Wilbert,

Does it Post?
If so, Start it up and tap the F8 key as it is
posting to get to Safe Mode, choose "Last Known
good Configuration", <enter>
See if that gets you in.

The repair options in W2K may take care of that for you...when you
boot your windows install cd and get to the install/repair screens try
an automated repair job...the console only seems useful for editing
the MBR, which you don't need to do...Failing this, a re-install will
definitely work (just the WINNT directory)

Try the steps in Knowledge Base article 256194 No Desktop or Blank Desktop
After Logging On to Windows 2000 (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=256194).
You may have damaged one of the files listed in the article during the
errant shutdown.
