Win2k Server - Workgroup

P

PaulM

I wonder if anyone can help me. I have been running a small workgroup
(HOME), up until recently all machines were win2k Pro. I wanted to be
able to host more than 1 site on my IIS so I have aquired an old
server from work and installed win2k server.

I installed the server as a workgroup server not as a domain
controller, my machines are assigned static IP's as follow:

router (win2k pro) - 192.168.7.1
desktop (win2k pro) - 192.168.7.2
laptop (win2k pro) - 192.168.7.3
storage (win2k pro) - 192.168.7.4
newserver (win2k server) - 192.168.7.5

I am able to browse the web and the win2k pro machines from the new
server, and attach to the other machines via RAdmin. When I try to
view the newserver fro the other machines I can't see it in entire
network or the like, nor can I connect to it via RADmin. I can ping
192.168.7.5 no problems.

It sounds like some sort of permission problem but hey what do I know?

This is the first time I have installed and setup win2k server so
please do not assume anything, if you can spare the time your help
would be most appreciated.

Regards

Paul

Hi there,

This sounds like NetBIOS over TCP/IP is not enabled on the server's network interface.
1- Open the 'Network and dialup connections folder" from control panel
2- Right click on the NIC adapter and select properties from the context menu.
3- Highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) from the list of components on the general tab and click on the Properties button
4- Click on the Advanced button from the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties dialog box
5- Click on the WINS tab from the Advanced TCP/IP Settings Dialog box
6- Click on 'Enable netBIOS over TCP/IP to select that option and click the OK button on all the dialog boxes for the change to take effect.

Also make sure that File & Print Sharing is enabled for the Network connection.
