Win2k and Duo/Quad Core

Is it possible for Win2k to exploit Duo/Quad Core Intel Processors ?
Or is Core solely a hardware function independent of the OS ? What
about other Intel latest technology ? Are the OS dependent ? Thanks.

To a limited extent, yes. It depends on the version of Windows 2000.
2000 is not aware of HyperThreading and Dual Core processors, but the
hardware will present each core as a separate CPU. Likewise, with
HyperThreading enabled (if the CPU supports it) then 2000 will see each
HT core as dual CPUs. So, in theory, a dual quad processor with
HyperThreading will appear as 16 CPUs if everything is enabled in BIOS.
Now, how many CPUs are used will depend on the version of 2000. If I
remember correctly, it will be like this:

2000 Pro - 2 CPUs
2000 Server - 4 CPUs
2000 Advanced Server - 8 CPUs
2000 Data Center Server - 32 CPUs

Thanks everybody. I will try to understand further from the reading
material. But I guess another option would be to move to XP or Vista.

just for curiosity, have you tried "psexec" free utility?

it allows you to start new program, on *desired* target cpu

look at www.sysinternals.com [also available on microsoft]

I'm currently using WIn 2000. If I migrate to Win XP, would I still
be able to install my current application such as Office 2000 ? Or do
I need to purchase new applications ?

Thanks.

In essence XP and 2000 are the same so you should not have a problem. I use
Office 97 on W2k and XP without problems. (No idea about Vista though)

Hope that helps

Office 2000 works just fine on XP. So do many older apps. If they
worked on win2k, the chances are very good that XP will run them too.

I haven't seen enough of Vista to make a judgment call on overall
application compatibility.
