SYMPTOMS (FROM MICROSOFT KNOWLEDGE BASE)
"After you try to log on to your Windows 2000-based
computer by using a valid user name and password, the
Loading your personal settings dialog box is displayed,
followed by the Saving your settings dialog box. However,
the desktop does not appear, and the Welcome to Windows
logon screen is displayed again.
NOTE: If the paging file is located on the system or boot
partition, you may also receive the following warning
message before returning to the "Welcome to Windows" logon
screen:
[Limited Virtual Memory]
Your system has no paging file, or the paging file is too
small."
This problem occurred after trying to install a new
Western Digital hard drive. The installation process
failed shortly after starting the process of coping the
old drive (a 60GB WD) to the new drive (a 250GB WD).
After the process failed I ran Norton System Works / Find
and Fix Windows Problems. This showed several shortcut
errors pointing to the new drive being installed. Since
the isstallation failed I deleted the shortcuts. I believe
this was a mistake. I now think that one of the shortcuts
was pointing to the PAGING FILE and that's why I am
getting the above message.

RESOLUTION (again from MS KB)
"NOTE: If the computer is networked but not part of a
domain, you may need to map a connection to the machines
IPC$ share using that computer's local administrator
credentials before being able to attach using Regedit.exe
or Regedt32.exe as described below to make changes.
To permit a logon and/or change the boot volume drive
letter back to its originally assigned letter, use any of
the following methods:
net use \\remote_machine_name\IPC$ /user:administrator *"
HERE'S THE PROBLEM
I am unable to logon using the above reference NET USE
command from my other computer, running Windows 98SE, that
is setup on a wireless network in my home. I get the
following error message:
"The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure
you typed it correctly, and try again."
I have tried several variations in Map Network Drive (the
computer does show up on the network as Joe). There is no
password.
Net use \\JOE\IPC$ /user:administrator *
Net use \\JOE\IPC$ /user:administrator
Net use \\JOE\IPC$ /administrator *
Net use \\JOE\IPC$ /administrator
Net use \\JOE\IPC$
I have tried to enter in SAFE MODE with the same results
as normal mode. How do I get in to this computer to edit
the Registry?
