Do either of the computers have a software firewall (ICF / WF, or third party)?
If so, you need to configure them for file sharing. Firewall configurations are
a very common cause of (network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

The browser is a possible cause of problems like yours.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

Assuming you want to share the intrenet connection, you may want to setup Internet Sharing Connection. For how to setup ICS, check this page, http://howtonetworking.com/Windows/ics.htm. for how to setup workgroup network, http://howtonetworking.com/workgroupsetup.htm

OK, let's try something else.

Provide ipconfig information for each computer, as a start.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.
6) Identify operating system (by name, version, and Service Pack level) with
each ipconfig listing.

So were amd and celeron connected when you did the ipconfigs? The ipconfigs
show (for the Realteks) amd with Media disconnected, and celeron with an APIPA
address:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=220874

Can celeron actually access the host, and / or the internet? Or did I
misunderstand your original help request?

Do you have a cross-over cable, or a straight-thru cable, connecting amd and
celeron? Which lights light up on the network cards? Have you run the Device
Manager Troubleshooter on both network cards?

When you ran the network setup wizard on amd, what option did you pick? Was it
"This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my
network connect to the Internet through this computer."? On celeron, was it
"This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network
or through a residential gateway."?

yeah, they were connected.
the problem is i can see celeron on amd, but cant access it. and celeron
cant see amd at all and cant access the internet. amd is the host and celeron
is the client.

using a cross-over cable to connect amd and celeron.
the green light is on when the computers are both on, and it represents an
active link (i assume since next to the green light it says "link" and the
orange light says "act").
hmm, i havent run device manager troubleshooter yet. should i?
yeah, when i ran the network setup wizard on amd i chose: "This computer
connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my network connect
to the Internet through this computer". but i couldnt run the network setup
wizard on celeron. it said that the wizard wasnt compatible with windows 2000.

So you are saying that both green and orange are on, on both computers? With
cable plugged in only? How about with cable unplugged?

Sounds fishy.
1) You ran network setup wizard, and chose the correct option.
2) You connected a cross-over cable.
3) Lights indicate "active" and "link".
4) You have Autoconfig and DHCP Client enabled on celeron.
5) Celeron shows an APIPA address.
6) Amd shows "Media disconnected".

Well, you're right - you can't run the wizard on Windows 2000. But Celeron is
configured anyway. All it needs is an IP address, which it should get if it
connects to Amd.

It has to be either:
1) Bad network card.
2) Bad cable.
3) Bad network drivers.

Try:
1) Run DM Troubleshooter on both computers.
2) Get another cross-over cable, or make sure that this one works, test with
another computer or something.
3) Un install (in Device Manager) and re install (re boot computer) network
cards on both computers.

sorry about the slow reply but i havent had time to get on the computer lately.

umm... i think you may have misinterpreted the part about the lights. only
the green light is on. not both of them.

i'll have to get back to you on the DM troubleshooter when i have time to
run it, which would be tomorrow. but concerning the crossover cable, it works
since i previously had an internet connection being shared before i
reformatted the celeron box. i have no idea why it isnt working this time. =\

thanks

Well, great. If you don't have 4 lights on (2 on each computer), then you most
likely have a hardware problem. So no need to investigate network
configurations, etc, first you have to solve the hardware issue.

You just eliminated, as primary cause:
3) Bad network drivers.

If the lights don't light, you have either:
1) Bad network card.
2) Bad cable.

ok.. i found some problems in device manager on celeron. but there is no
problem associated with the network card itself. what i've found is i have 5
"Other Devices":

- Ethernet Controller
- Multimedia Audio Controller
- PCI Simple Communications Controller
- PCI Simple Communications Controller
- Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

all of the have yellow questions marks as the main icon and a little yellow
circle with a black exclamation mark next to them. all of them say that
they're drivers are not installed. but before i reformatted, i never
installed drivers for my video and sound, so why is it asking for drivers
now? i assume this makes my networking problem more complicated?

I wouldn't rule them out. Try deleting the Ethernet and "PCI Simple
Communications" controllers, and rebooting.

It would be good though if you could answer the question about the lights.
Which lights are on, on which computers?

on both computers, the lights on the network cards that are on, are green.
and when i shutdown the celeron, a message next to the clock on the amd says:
Local Area Network - A network cable is unplugged. And the amd's network
card light goes off.
And same for when i'm on the celeron and turn the amd off.

i uninstalled the Ethernet and "PCI Simple Communications" controllers and
rebooted. when i rebooted it says it found new hardware. and then i tell it
to find a suitable driver, but then it says it cant find a driver and asks me
to select either "Disable the device. The Add/Remove Hardware Wizard in the
Control Panel can be used to complete the driver installation." or "Skip
driver installation of this device. Windows will prompt again to perform the
driver installation." i choose to disable the device.

Thanks,
Jason
