Win XP HP LaserJet 4 printer driver ??

H

Henry Kolesnik

I've been using a HP LaserJet 4 printer for about three years on this XP
PC. The driver is the one that came with XP. About a month ago I lost
a feature that was very useful for me and I can't get it back.
To print, I go to File then Print and a small window pops up to let me
select the pages I want and then in the lower left hand corner there's
subwindow Print Frame that allowed me to select a bullet for
As laid out on the screen
The selected frame
Each frame separately
The Print Frame subwindow is now grayed out and I can't select one of
the three bullets. I've removed and reloaded the print driver but no
luck.
I'm curious as to what might have happened and how I solve the problem?
If this is not the place to ask can someone please point me.
Thanks

1. Never get any drivers from Windows Update (even if you could find
one among the 1000 hits listed in a search for "laserjet 4" printer
drivers).

2. The print frames option only is active (not grayed out) if there are
in fact frames on the website being displayed. From your description,
it sounds as if you are printing from Firefox (the print frames option
for IE 6 is on the "options" tab of the print dialog).

If you are certain that you are looking at a website with frames, what
happens if you open the site in IE? If that works, you might get help
from posting in news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.support.firefox (or, I
suppose, in an IE NG if the problem happens in IE also).

You are correct that I was printing from Firefox and I tried it from IE
and the options are grayed out.
The site I print is Fidelity.com where I track and try to print a
summary of my investments so all the info I want fits on one page.
Before the subwindow was grayed out I selected one of the options, which
one I can't recall but one of the options would make everything I wanted
fit on one page. Now I have to go to preview and scale the page to 70%.
that works but not as nicely as the sub window.
I would also like to see a description of the 3 options instead of
guessing. I'll go over to Mozilla FF if I can find a group.
Thanks for all the help..

I see what you mean. I was going to ask if Fidelity had perhaps
re-coded their site, but I just went there using FF and the print frames
option works for me. I hope someone at at mozilla.org has some
suggestions for you.

There's plainly some interaction between the web browser and the printer
driver that causes the Print Frames option to appear and become active.
That it doesn't work properly in two different browsers hints that the
problem is in the driver ... but that's more detail than I know. If you
don't get an answer in the FF NG, perhaps someone in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax will know (I'd suggest a more
descriptive subject line).

If you're using the built-in Windows driver for this printer, try
running sfc /scannow (from Start > Run or a Command Prompt). You may be
asked for your Windows CD or you may have to point the scanner at
c:\i386 (or wherever your Windows install files are located).

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Hi Hank,
I would suggest you visit hp.com and see if there is a driver
update for your Laserjet printer; if so, download and install it.

I had a LaserJet 4 YEARS ago (OVER 10 years).

I doubt that there are any new drivers.
