Win 95 file access faster than XP pro?

D

Dwight

I hope someone can help me out with this.

I have 3 computers, 2 are running windows xp and one runs
windows 95. One of the xp machines has directories full of
files that I access from the other xp machine and win95
machine.

When I use the xp machine to access files on the other xp
machine, a flashlight pops up and goes back and forth 4 to
6 times and then the files are finally displayed.

When I use the win 95 machine to access the files on the
xp machine the files pop up instantly. There is no delay
or flashlight at all.

Anyone know why this is or if I can change a setting to
make the xp machine access the files as fast as the win95
machine?

That's not a fair comparison. Windows XP requires
substantially more processing power to find and view the
files than does Windows 95. It also requires more memory
which, quite possibly, explains why a Pentium III system
at 600MHz with Windows XP using the NTFS file format is
substantially slower than a Pentium II computer using
Windows 95 and FAT-16 or FAT-32 file format at 200MHz or
300MHz. Windows 95 has so many flaws in it that I
wouldn't be caught dead using it on the Internet or
anywhere else. It's no wonder why they don't support it
anymore.
If you run Windows XP, it is better to have at least a
2.0GHz Pentium IV system or better. Anything less will
pronounce the slowness of the file access. Uncheck all
unnecessary items at startup in the system configuration
utility will improve system performance, as will
installing additional memory. That should at least
decrease the number of times you see the flashlight while
the system searches for files. Once you have at least 256
or 384 Megs of RAM, you will notice a substantial increase
in file operations and decreased access time. 384K is a
recommended minimum memory for Windows XP, although they
say 128K, forget it--it will take all day if you run more
than one program at once. 512K is preferred for XP or
more if you can afford it.

Rubbish! I'm running XP SP2 on a 933MHz Toshiba Tecra 9000 (Pentium III -
albeit with 728 MB RAM) and it's pretty darn quick!
