Hi, Joan,

If you have the XP O/S CD, yes, you can do this. Probably
better than to just use an upgrade version.

Open the CD-ROM drive during shutdown. Allow complete
shutdown of PC.
Place the XP O/S CD in the CD-Rom drive, close the 'door'
and fire up the computer.
You should get a screen message to "press enter to boot
from CD". You will want to do this.
The screen will then prompt you to either repair your
existing system or install XP. If you choose to install
XP, it should wipe your hard drive clean and install XP.
Or you can use a W2K or Win98 Boot Diskette and reformat
your hard drive first, clearing it out and cleaning it up
at the same time.
Choose the option from the bootup with the boot diskette
that allows access to your CD-ROM drive. Then put the XP
CD in the CD-ROM drive and reboot. Remove the boot
diskette before rebooting.
The above assumes you don't want to keep any files
remaining on the 'old' hard drive. Otherwise, copy them
off before attempting this.

It should work out just fine for you. No worries.
