Win 2000 ics with xp client

Ok heres the problem: Ive got a win 2000 pro computer with
all updates connected directly to the internet via dialup
modem, and a win xp client also with the updates connected
via lan to the win 2000 machine. Ive followed all the
steps on the microsoft knowledge base to get ics working,
but to no avail. Both computers can ping each other, and
file sharing is working, but it just cant seem to share
the connection. Ive even tried wingate, but to no avail.
It just doesnt seem to work. Any ideas?

All you need to do is to set all connections to obtain IP automatically and
enable ICS on the modem connection. Not sure which KB article you followed.

Your 2000 pro box should have an IP address of 192.168.0.1 on the
inside. Your XP box should have 192.168.0.2 and have DHCP enabled.
Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway for
the XP client should be 192.168.0.1. Use ipconfig /all to
determine these settings. Post the ipconfig results from both
boxes here if you continue to have problems.

Are you able to ping an outside IP address e.g. ping 136.171.122.75
from the XP client? How about a FQDN (ping www.microsoft.com)?
