Will only go into standby once

My desktop pc running XP will only go into standby once. After a reboot, it
will go into standby just fine. Pressing the power button brings it out of
standby and all is well, until I try to put it into standby again. It then
hangs. All I can then do is push and hold the power button to shut it down
and then reboot. Any ideas on why it hangs when going into standby a second
time?
