Standby issues

I have a relatively new Dell notebook using XP Pro. For a while now, if I
close the lid to get on with other work, the notebook doesn't always go into
standby (or is it hibernation?). The fan continues and it gets relatively
hot. When I open the lid, the "entry screen" is already there asking for my
p/w - in other words, it doesn't seem to have gone into standby at all.

So I clicked on standby which caused the screen to go black - as expected.
However, it doesn't seem to have shut down. When I am ready to get it back to
work, I have closed the lid and reopened after a few minutes, but no action.
I eventually have to shut it down by holding the on/off button down. Then
start it up in the usual fashion. Annoying and takes time.

In the power option, I changed the standby to 10 minutes and the hibernation
to 15 minutes. But that didn't help.

To be sure I don't have a very hot notebook, I have gone to total shut down
but in an airport, for example, that takes time which I don't always have.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks. Norm.

Can you forcibly place the machine into hibernation mode successfully,
much the same way as you tried (and failed) to put it into standby mode?

Thanks, Randem for your quick response. Actually, I have SP3 installed - came
with the computer. If you would let me know what other info. you need, I will
certainly get it to you.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your quick response. Actually, I had never put it into
hibernation but followed the usual standby with shift key. It went into
hibernation OK. Closed the lid for a while. Opened it and pressed the on/off
button and it went through the usual boot process. That part seems OK.

Any other thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you could use
any other info.

Regards, Norm.

I don't have a laptop, but I am supposing that there must be something
like a way to define what happens when you close the lid.

Have you gone to 'Power Options' in 'Control Panel' and defined what
your computer does when the lid is closed?

If so, what is set to do?

Control Panel | Power Options | Advanced | Power Buttons | When I close the
lid... <=what's selected here?
...The fan continues and it gets relatively hot.
To be sure I don't have a very hot notebook...

If the fan keeps running and "it gets relatively hot," it sure sounds like
the laptop's hot.

How hot is it now in the room/area where you usually use the laptop? Is the
room/area air-conditioned? Have you ever use a can of compressed air to
blow the dust, etc., off the fan and other vents on the bottom of the
laptop?

How new is "relatively new"? Is the computer still under Warranty or
Service Contract? Have you asked Dell Support about this behavior or posted
in the Dell Forums about it?

Hi PA Bear,
Thanks for your questions which I shall try to answer.
Control Panel |.... what's selected here? <Standby> In fact, Standby is selected for all 3 buttons.

Regarding "hot", when one puts his fingers on the underside, it is not
uncomfortable. I have had notebooks where the underside would almost burn
your fingers.

The room where I usually use the notebook is about 23 - 25 degrees C. or 75
degrees F. No airconditioning here - seldom needed in Vancouver.

Notebook bought around Feb. 1, 2009. Still quite clean. It is under warranty
with Dell and I have talked to them a couple of times about this issue. A
real "tour de force" and sure takes valuable time. Hence, I'm trying the MS
newsgroups which has sure been helpful with other software issues with other
computers in the past.

Many thanks for your thoughts.

Norm.

If it really went into hibernation it shouldn't go through the "usual boot
process" when you tap the power key. The computer should be back to where
you were in a maximum of three to five seconds.

HeyBub,

Yes, I was a bit in error. For the hibernation, it seems to go into it
correctly and gets our in 5-6 seconds right back to the page I was working
on. It would seem that the problem is with the standby. I dare not simply
close the lid down to put it into standby. It wil wake up and then with the
lid closed, heat up.

Cheers, Norm.
