will not update

I am running vista ultimate. I have tried to download an update that my
virus software company says I need to fix a problem. When I go to update site
it is recommended for vista but after I try to download it, it says i don't
need it and stops install. There is also another update that says failed on
update list. I then uninstall and try again. Then I get the same message I
get for the other update i told you about in the beggenning

You need to check with the software vendor...
that does not appear to be a Vista-related problem

I have checked virus company again and got the same answer. Even been on their forums page that is about this problem and everyone says this update fixes problem. The second update as nothing to do with the first problem. It is a security update for vista, it has tried to update but failed. When I uninstall and try again it downloads then tries to install but the message pops up and says it is not needed for my computer.
