Why won't XP give me the option to play my mp3 cd with my player of choice?

When I insert a cd of mp3's into my cd player, Real Player tries to
open it even though I do not have anything other than RP files
selected as a file that Real Player should try to open.

Okay, so I go to the cd in question, right click and choose
properties, hoping to be able to tell Windows to always open this type
of file with my player of choice, Quintessential.

But Windows ONLY gives the following choices for what I would like
Windows to do with this type of file:
Real Player
WMP
Open the folder
Take no action

How can I get Quintessential Player (or others) into that list of
choices? or otherwise make it open a cd filled with mp3's with that
player?

I do have Quintessential's options set as as the default player for
that type of file (Mp3) but still Real Player tries to open and play
the cd.

Thanks for your help.

I HATE the media wars!

p.s. I'm using XP Home Ser Pack 1

Windows XP has nothing to do with your problem. Why would you think it does?

The fact is that you installed software that has "asserted" itself in many
ways and has taken over functions that you may not want it to take over. It
is YOUR error. You should have done a custom install and when you get to the
screen where it TELLS you what file extensions it is going to take
over -"you" have to say ***NO***, by un-checking a box.

Don't ever allow software to perform a so called standard install. You never
know what you may end up with. You may now uninstall Real whatever. Then
open Media Player (or whatever player you want to control the file
extensions in question), go to options/file types (or a similar setting).
Put a check in the box for everything you want media play (or other player)
to have control over.

Then you can do a "custom" reinstall of Real whatever, disallowing it to
take over your computer.

Again, Windows XP has nothing to do with your problem.

Hi There
Haveing Real Player on your PC is just like haveing Norton or McCaffee on
it,you don't control your pc anymore , they do.
Uninstall it and make like you never heard of it.
Thats my 1.5 cents worth on that matter.

Right-click on the file in question and select 'Open with'. If you don't
see 'open with' try holding the shift key down while right-clicking on the
file. From 'Open with' select 'Choose program' rather than any of the other
options.

Wrong. But thanks for playing.

A much more eloquent solution is this:

Make a shortcut for Quintessential.and stick it in the 'send to'
folder and you
can then select it from the right click menu OR

You can assign XP to open or run programs based on your choice in the
new
AutoPlay tab in drive properties. But there isn't an easy way to add
or change
your choices -- enter XP PowerToys.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
STEPS

1.. Download Microsoft's PowerToys for XP and install.
2.. Run TweakUI. Choose My Computer from the list.
3.. Click the + on AutoPlay, then select Handlers.
From here, you can add your own selections or edit existing selections
at will.
For example, you may want to run a CD player you purchased when you
insert a
music disk.

When finished, close TweakUI, right click on your drive, click on the
AutoPlay
tab and you will see your entry.

I agree that RealPlayer sucks. However some files require it. When I
installed RP I told it to ONLY play RP files. However, for some reason
it still tried to open my mp3 cd. See above for solution using
TweakUI.
