Why is cross reference French?

The text of my document is English, yet when I insert a cross-ref., it is
defined as French (when you click in it, the language in the status bar is
French). Where did that come from and how can it be changed (globally)?

Also, why is the format defined as Hyperlink (blue, underlined char.
format), yet I do not see blue, underlined ref. text in the Word doc.?

This is Word 2003 SP2 on Windows XP. Thanks much.

Try the Reveal Formatting taskpane -- does it "reveal" anything about
where this (supposedly) direct format may come from?

The format of what (the cross-ref?) is defined as Hyperlink? Again, does
the taskpane shed any light?

This is Word 2003 SP2 on Windows XP.

If the cross-reference includes the \h switch, then it's been set up to
hyperlink, but it won't display the hyperlink formatting because, as a rule,
a cross-reference in a printed document (remember: Word is designed to create
printed documents) should conform to the surrounding text.

In Tools/Language/Set language do you have automatic language detection
activated? If so, this could be the problem underlying the French formatting.
Are you sure the original text is not formatted as French?
If it's not, try selecting the cross reference, then press Ctrl+Spacebar to
remove any direct formatting (formatting not applied by a style). Does the
French go away?
