why Internet explorer launch is so slow?

The pc (XP Home sp2) is slow and can go to internet to surf such as Yahoo,
except that I am unable to go to the Mail (at Yahoo).

The virus definitions was not updated for ages, so it was updated for AVG,
Spybot 1.4 and Avast and the scans were done. And all the 'nots" were
deleted. Defragmentation were also done as well as clear the TIF, Temp
folders.

Now, when I try to launch the IE, it still takes a long time and at Yahoo
website when I click Mail, the login page will not appear and instead this
messsage appers"the page cannot be displayed'

The spec is 2.4 ghz processor with 256 mb of Ram although effectively its
only 192mb as 64md taken by the on-board graphic. Please advice what can I do
to get the pc to normacy? Thanks

What version of Internet Explorer are you using?

Windows XP can work satisfactorily with only 256 mb of RAM but most
users here would recommend 512 mb for a more satisfactory experience.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space.

Do you leave the computer on 24/7?

What type of internet connection are you using? Broadband, cable or?
Does performance vary according to the time of day?

What Add Ons are you using? In Internet Explorer select Tools, Manage
Add Ons, Enable or Disable Add Ons. What impact on performance is
apparent if you disable all Add Ons?

Hope this helps.

Earlier done/clear the TIF,Temp folders and just done the Clean up and give a
space of 32 mb
HDDsize 80 gb free space 50 gb (70%)
IE 6.02900 SP2 and using BBand and its not on 24/7
When I try to reach housecall, there will be a message that IE encountered a
problem and when I click "dont send"/report error", the IE will close.

The HOSTS file looks ok as there is nothing after 127.0.0.1 localhost entry.
During the search, it also reveal there is a file called hosts.msn
c;\windows\system32\drivers... and could not open with note pad. Any idea why
is it there as it does not appear in my other xp system?

Disabled all the add-on, still its take a long time to launch the IE, and
once at yahoo main page and click "MAIL", the next screen will show "the page
cannot be displayed'. I can go to any other web site apart from the problem
trying to do houscall scan.

Now, tryign to do symantec on line scan and it says "Downloading ActiveX
Controls" Its already 10 mins and still no visible progress except I can see
the dots moving around.

With all the Active X disabled and IE trying to download Active X from
Symantec, then the Task Manager, under Performance shows Total=262432
Limit=474608 Peak=318508. CPU usage range from 2-5%

What other things can I do, please help and many thanks for your assistance.
