Why doesn't automatice search work?

G

George Hester

In Windows XP I have set the automatic search in Microsoft Internet Explorer
6 this way. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer | Search | Change preferences
| Change Internet search behavior | Select the default search engine |
Google | OK.

I expect that is the way to Chanmge [the] Internet search behavior. So I
type Merlin in the address bar and hit <ENTER>. I arrive at the
search.msn.com search engine.

How do I fix this?

Look it up in the MS kb George. I am sure you already did and you have found an error in that particular KB. So why not just post that KB and point out that error to us all.

Just use the Google toolbar.

Open IE, press Ctrl+E, Select Customize, Select Autosearch settings,
Select Google Sites, Select "Just display results...." Select OK, Select
OK, "X" out of "Search"(close it), Now type your "search term" in the
address bar.

OK I did that. I opened IE and hi CTR-E. Then a window with a Dog in it
pops up. At that point I am stuck. There is no "Select Customize..." All
I see is the Dog; Sample Question; You may also want to. And within that
last there are two options. Search this Computer and Change Preferences. I
am going to assume you mean to click Change preferences. Which is really
what I told you I did in my op but let's do it anyway. So I do that. At
this point there is no "Select Autosearch settings..." There are a number
of options:

With an animated screen character
With a different character
With Indexing Service...
Change files and folders...
Change Internet Search behavior
Don't Show baloon tips
Turn AutoComplete off.

So again I am stuck there is not "Select Autosearch settings.

I am going to assume you mean Change Internet Search beavior which again is
what I told you I did in my op.

So let's do that.

Now I am stuck again There is a Select the default search engine which is
what I assume you mean to do since that is where Google is. Again that is
what I said I did in my op. So let's do it.

I do NOT see "Just Dispaly results." That I know is in IE properties not at
the location I am in.

So obviously my assumptions of what you are talking about must be wrong.
Could you please give the sequence of steps to change the Automatic search
settings so they match the GUI? Thanks.

I would like to change the default search engine in IE. Do you know how to
do that or does this also not work right in Windows XP? Thanks.

Install the Google toolbar, and use its properties to do what you want.

I think the issue is the "Search Companion" is stuffing the works. Once
that pile of dung is disabled it works correctly. Close all but one copy
of I.E. and open "search" Select the "Change Preferences", Then Select
"Change Internet search behavior", then select "With Classic Internet
search", Then OK. Now Close and then reopen I.E.
At this point the search pane should have "Customize" available. so
follow steps
Select Customize
Select Autosearch settings,
Select Google Sites,
Select "Just display results...."
Select OK
Select OK
"X" out of "Search"(close it)
Now type your "search term" in the address bar.
Google should appear in main window with results.
