Why does Word not promote my outline element when I press tab?

Normally Word used to promote an outline element by pressing "tab" or demote
by pressing "shift+tab", but now all it will do is add a tab after the title.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

If you have Word 2000 or earlier, check the box for "Tabs and backspace set
left indent" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.

If you have Word 2002 or 2003, check the box for "Set first- and left-indent
with tabs and backspaces" on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools |
AutoCorrect Options.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?amFja19taWNo?=,
Normally Word used to promote an outline element by pressing "tab" or demote
by pressing "shift+tab", but now all it will do is add a tab after the title.
Personally, I prefer Shift+Alt+Left/Right arrow; it's always been more reliable
for me.

I know which feature/option you mean, but where to access it depends on the
version of Word, which you don't mention?
