Everytime I start up my computer running Windows XP prof with all updates
C:\WINDOWS\system 32 folder opens. How could this happen and how do I stop
it occurring?

You can also use a "script" from Kelly's Korner to correct the problem:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Goto line #260 and select "System 32 Folder Opens Upon Boot" and run the
script.

This can be caused by a blank entry, such as can be left behind by
an incomplete program removal, in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and/or
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys. It can also
be caused by an entry in these same keys that starts with a " / ."
