The animation schemes task pane is greyed? Could be you have turned off the
new features in PPT 2003. Try, Tools - Options - Edit tab - right at the
bottom next to new features is there a check next to the first option New
animations effects? If so remove it. Be aware that if you use animation
schemes these will only work on placeholders not on other objects.
If that is not the cause, and you are talking about the custom animation
task pane, maybe you applied animation to the master slide this will show up
greyed in the task pane, but you could copy it to the slide. Click on the
listarrow next to the animation and choose copy to slide.
