Why does my template not apply color?

Hi there, I've created a template for my company which uses various masters
for each product group. The title master has a black background whereas the
master slide has a cream background. Whenever I apply my master to an old
presentation, however, neither the background colours or font colours are
applied. Is there anything I'm possibly doing wrong? Thanks in advance for

Probably the old presentation didn't follow the slide masters. If everything
was done manually, doesn't use text placeholders, and doesn't follow the
slide color scheme, then applying the new master or template won't override
it. Here's some info on color schemes that should help explain that part,

So, for example, the person who created the file may have used a manual
textbox and gone to the color wheel in text colors|more colors to apply the
font color. If they did that, then text settings from the new master won't
apply.

The background is a little odd, though. Sometimes you have to reapply the
slide layout before the new template/master will "take." Or is it possible
the person used a filled rectangle to manually create the background color
on each slide?
