Why does FrontPage 2003 Verify show some valid URLs as broken

Bruce Bowman

When I run FP2003 Verify on my web site, it shows quite a few external
links as being broken, when in fact they are not when I copy those URLS
into the browser.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems?
IS there any way to fix this problem, or is a a Frontpage feature!!

Thanks
Bruce

That is really not a FrontPage issue. It's a matter of how a hosting company / web master has set
up their server.
When you verify hyperlinks in FrontPage, it sends a "Ping" request to the server for the URL it is
checking.
Some hosts / webmasters have servers set to *Not* respond to "Ping" requests because "Ping" requests
are used in Denial of service "DOS" attacks by hackers.

To see an example of this open a command window and type:
ping www.yahoo.com you will get four replies.
Then type: ping www.grc.com and you will get "request timed out" but if you click the link to
www.grc.com the website will open
because it's responding to an http request.

If the url is a dynamic one ... for example has a ? in the url .. then
FrontPage won't validate it.. you can check yourself then remember those
that won't validate...

there is a third party free checker that will do that but I still prefer to
use the fp one as it will update several pages at once for me.
